WHERE YOUR FOOD COMES FROM
Our list of growers and producers is impressive. We've had the opportunity to visit many of them on their farms and in their production facilities to see first hand their dedication to their trade and community. Whether they grow organic produce, raise animals, make top rated meats and cheeses, or bake bread, they excel in their craft. We want to share them here with you both in pictures and words because we believe knowing where our food comes from is important. Enjoy!
With a passion for making great cheese and a strong sense of pride, Frank Talarico packed up his family and set off for the West. Little did he know that more than 30 years later, his ambitions would help create a Calgary success story… A success story founded on his relentless attention to his cheese, his customer and his family.
By the mid 70’s, Frank had already developed a reputation as a master cheesemaker working at his father’s Ontario facility. Some might have said that while his roots were Italian, his veins flowed with cheese. In 1976 he leveraged that heritage, passion and expertise to launch Alberta Cheese with one simple plan. Live every day through three fundamental principles:
1.Provide exceptional cheese;
2.with exceptional service;
3.through a loving family atmosphere.
Today you’ll be comforted to know that everyone at Alberta Cheese continues to live by these principles. From Frank’s now adult children who work together to run the business with love and attention to detail, to the long standing employees who carefully make, package and deliver the cheese to their valued customers, everyone at the Alberta Cheese family continues to live out these principles daily. In fact, don’t be surprised to see Frank out back inspecting the fresh milk or out at the retailers arranging his cheese on the shelf. You might say, while this roots are Italian, his veins still flow with cheese.

RAW & ORGANIC KOMBUCHA
From the beaches of Hawaii to Montreal's hip Mile-End, RISE's mother has come a long way (literally).
Sure, everyone's mom is special, but RISE's mother is the mother of all kombuchas for a reason. Although she's happily settled in Montreal where she grew up, she was actually born in the South Pacific. When world travellers Mathieu Gallant and David Côté crossed paths randomly, thousands of miles from home, on the sandy beaches of Hawaii, the former acquaintances bonded over their interest in the islands' raw food and drink scene. An idea germinated, and the two backpackers soon said "aloha" to Hawaii and "allo" to their native Canadian province of Quebec with a business plan in mind... along with an actual piece of a Hawaiian kombucha SCOBY in their carry-on. As RISE's mother-to-be adjusted to life in the North East, Gallant and Côté met Simon Bertrand, now the president of RISE. The three friends, all intent on creating a locally produced, organic, fair-trade and vegan kombucha, put together a super-star team of businessmen, brewers and scientists to form what's now the over 60-member team that makes up RISE. The maple tree-lined streets of Montreal's hip Mile-End might be a far cry from the palm tree-dotted beaches of Hawaii where it all began, but that's what makes our mother's story so special. We're happy to share her ecologically-sound and socially-conscious kombucha with you. Think of every bottle of RISE as a Hawaiian lei made of Quebecois fleurs-de-lis -- totally unique.
Schipper Farms is very much a family business. In 1985, Harm and Dee Schipper, took over a family farm in the Netherlands. Their crops consisted of outdoor vegetables such as lettuce, leek and herbs, as well as grains, sugar beets and potatoes. In 1996, they moved to Bow Island, Alberta and built a small one acre greenhouse on their newly purchased farm. Over the past two decades the farm and production has continued to expand, and now includes multiple solar panels and broiler chickens. They work closely with their daughters Lia and Colleen. Since the summer of 2014 they have 2 full time employees to help cover the consistent need for labour. To market some of the greenhouse products, they are a member of the Red Hat Co-op in Redcliff. In 2014 Lia was chosen as Alberta Greenhouse Grower of the year for her enterprising spirit and growing the business into a consumer destination.
